During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
