The Year 2026 Declared the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Frogs are anything but new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. Yet, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are legitimate amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results tell a compelling story: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming seems particularly strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues facilitate a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

A number of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year so far.

Should these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be on the verge of a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
