The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
