Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
