British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
